A Review of MamaSezz

posted September 21, 2021

“I’m so busy! How can I even cook this way?”

“My elderly parents want to eat whole food, plant-based, but need easy options, like a meal delivery!”

“How can I help my kid in college be less of a junk-food vegan and eat more healthy?”

“Sometimes I don’t even have things to take to work for lunches—HELP!”

I get these messages in my inbox and hear them from clients A LOT! If you’ve heard yourself say these things, I’ve got an option for you.

While I promote and teach cooking whole food, plant-based (WFPB) at home, I understand there are times we need a little convenience…without sacrificing our health or our ethics. I was recently introduced to MamaSezz, a WFPB meal subscription service that’s not only healthy, but zero waste and 100% responsible for their packaging, extremely rare!

About MamaSezz

MamaSezz is co-founded and run by Meg Donahue in Vermont and New Hampshire. Their mission is to provide great tasting, WFPB meal components so people can live their best lives. Their meals are endorsed by many health organizations, including the American Institute of Cancer Research, with “0% B.S. (you know, Bad Stuff)”. They started with local delivery, but now ship throughout the continental United States.

Meg started MamaSezz after looking for WFPB meal subscription programs and finding none. She had dramatically improved her health, and the health of her mother, by switching her diet, but just wanted a reprieve from the time and energy spent cooking. Hence, MamaSezz was born! Watch the truly inspirational MamaSezz story here:

MamaSezz sources their high-quality ingredients from suppliers and farmers who also utilize sustainable practices. They use organic ingredients as much as possible.

Sustainability is so important to MamaSezz that they take back 100% of their packaging to reuse or recycle! They even give you a prepaid FedEx label and tape to send everything back in the box they shipped to you. #veganzerowaste!

Review

I got A Taste of MamaSezz sample bundle, similar to their Get Me Started Initial Bundle, to try. It arrived via FedEx in a single box with several ice packs in it to keep it chilled. Everything was in great condition and icy cold. It included:

Power Breakfast Smoothie

Lazy Lasagna

I added chopped zucchini, salt, nutritional yeast, and basil to the Lazy Lasagna to perk it up. Photo by Cindy Thompson

Ginger Garlic Protein Strips & Pecan Balsamic Dressing

Omigoodness! These strips are the BOMB! It took every ounce of willpower for me not to just eat them straight out of the bag while making this salad! Photo by Cindy Thompson

Mama’s Burgers

All Day Not-A-Cookie

Everything was all prepared and ready to heat and eat. (Note, these are really just staples or meal-starters, we had to add our own fresh veggies, bread, condiments, etc. for a complete meal.)

These are not shelf-stable, most need to be refrigerated, but they had a two-week use by date, which was great (although we ate it all up long before that).

We didn’t have to figure out how we were going to use these items because MamaSezz includes a great document with serving suggestions, meal plan, shopping list, and recipes! Everything took just a few minutes to put together.

Why Would I Recommend This?

Here’s the thing, yes, I think it’s important to cook our own food. However, life does get busy and if that prevents you from eating healthy, I want you to have an option. MamaSezz is that! The food was delicious, healthy, and easy to put together.

If I was not retired from the fire service, I can guarantee that I would buy MamaSezz and keep a bunch of it in the fire station freezer to use on those crazy busy shifts where we don’t get time to make our meals.

This is also a great option if you’re new to plant-based eating and need help getting started. All you need to do is shop for some healthy ingredients to go with so you have complete meals. It’s like training wheels so you can learn how to eat WFPB, until you master a new way of cooking.

Who does this work for?

MamaSezz sends you everything you need (including the tape!) to send back all the packaging materials to be reused/recycled! Photo by Cindy Thompson

  1. What a great-sounding service! I’d rather have fresh/preservative free foods to build meals around than store-bought, and I love that the foods are sourced so mindfully and that they even take back their packaging to reuse or recycle! Thank you for sharing about this wonderful company!
