Aug. 29 Podcast: Save Movement Founder + Vegan School Lunches

Listen and download the Main Street Vegan Podcast on Unity Online Radio, or listen and subscribe on Stitcher or  Apple Podcasts.

I always admire my guests, but this week, OMG, I go from admiration to awe. Anita Krajnc, cofounder of Toronto PigSave and The Save Movement, is a true shero for animals and for all of us who want to see them liberated. Arrested, tried, and acquitted for the “crime” of giving water to a parched pig en route to a Toronto slaughterhouse, this brave and committed woman takes a Gandhian and Tolstoyan approach to animal rights, rooting this struggle in the philosophies of nonviolence and truth force for which these pioneers are known. I sometimes wish it were possible to go back in time and talk with people like these. After yesterday’s program, I feel that I did that, since Anita so surely carries on that powerful spirit.

The Animal Legal Defense Fund is there for every legal fray involving non-human animals, and they have a host for victories to show for it. My second segment guest this week is ALDF’s Tyler Lobdell, a Food Law Fellow who discusses the current M-word lawsuit — ALDF, Tofurky, and the Good Food Institute challenging a new law in the state of Missouri deeming that only the flesh of a slaughtered animal can be called “meat,” a statute that seeks to limit the reach of both plant-based meat products now and cultured (“clean” or “lab-grown”) meats soon to come; and ALDF’s ongoing work to take down so-called ag-gag laws that criminalize exposing the conditions on farms and in slaughter facilities; and his own area of focus right now, school lunches. Why is so hard to get vegan foods into the school lunch program? What is being done legally? What can parents and others who care about kids do to help? Listen and find out — we even chat a bit about the role that lawyers and young people looking at the legal profession can play in making animal rights a reality.

Blast from the past! Another attorney — and another hero! — Steven Wise of the Nonhuman Rights Project, tirelessly appealing through the court system the notion that nonhuman beings are indeed persons. He’s starting with chimps and sees this as the reality that needs to be known and accepted eventually for animals across the board, so that they can move from one of the two existing legal options to the other: from property to person. This 2016 interview coincided with the debut of the film, Unlocking the Cage, about Wise’s work.
