Nathan Runkle is founder and president of Mercy For Animals—the world’s largest farm animal protection and vegan advocacy organization. Nathan founded MFA at age 15, after an animal abuse case in his local farming community in rural Ohio. He is author of the 2017 best-selling book Mercy For Animals: One Man’s Quest to Inspire Compassion and Improve the Lives of Farm Animals.

A nationally recognized speaker on animal protection and veganism, Nathan has presented at colleges, conferences, and many other forums around the globe. Nathan has traveled to over 30 countries, giving lectures, working with local NGOs, and helping launch vegan and animal protection initiatives.

Through his work with MFA, Nathan has been an outspoken advocate for vegan eating, featured in hundreds of newspaper, television, and radio interviews, including in USA Today, The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, and the Chicago Tribune and on CNN, National Public Radio, and ABC’s World News Tonight, Nightline, and 20/20.

Nathan has worked alongside elected officials, corporate executives, heads of international organizations, academics, farmers, celebrities, and film producers to pass landmark farm animal protection legislation, raise public awareness about vegetarianism, and implement animal welfare policy changes. At age 16, Nathan received the Bill Rosenberg Youth Activist Award—the highest national recognition for young animal advocates. In 2009, at age 25, Nathan became the youngest person ever inducted into the US Animal Rights Hall of Fame.

In 2015, Nathan co-founded The Good Food Institute, a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating a healthy, humane, and sustainable food supply. GFI works with scientists, investors, and entrepreneurs to make groundbreaking clean meat and plant-based foods the default option for consumers. Nathan is also co-founder of New Crop Capital, a venture capital firm that invests in clean meat and plant-based food companies that seek to outcompete animal products in the marketplace. New Crop Capital has been a lead investor in over a dozen of the biggest and most promising companies in the space, including Beyond Meat, Lyrical Foods, Sunfed Meats, Purple Carrot, Miyoko’s Kitchen, New Wave Foods, and Good Catch.

In 2016, Nathan co-founded Circle V—the world’s first vegan music festival—with music legends Moby and Tony Kanal (No Doubt and Dreamcar) and Goldenvoice (producers of Coachella, Desert Trip, and Stage Coach). The annual event attracts thousands of attendees and features musical acts as well as world-renowned speakers and vegan food and shops.

VegNews magazine has recognized both MFA and Nathan for substantial contributions to the vegetarian movement, naming Nathan one of the “25 Most Fascinating Vegetarians” and one of the country’s “Top 20 Activists Under 30 Years Old” and twice naming MFA “Non-Profit of the Year.” In 2016, over 2 million VegNews magazine readers voted MFA “Favorite Non-Profit Organization.” Nathan also appeared alongside Miley Cyrus in The Advocate magazine’s “Top 40 Under 40” list of people changing the world.
