MSV Podcast Show Notes: May 18, 2016 — “Unlocking the Cage” & the Nonhuman Rights Project with Attorney Steven Wise

Note: Derek Sanders of the band May Day Parade, originally scheduled as our first guest, had a family emergency and was unable to appear on today’s program.

Steven M. Wise, the attorney who has spent 30 years working to bring the legal status of “person” to chimpanzees joins us just as the film being hailed as “the chimps’ Blackfish” is about to go into theatrical release, gives an insightful and exciting interview about the legal concept of personhood, the four chimpanzees — Keko, Tommy, Hercules, and Leo — on whose behalf these landmark lawsuits have been filed, and the vision of the Nonhuman Rights Project, expanding its scope to include other apes, elephants, and orcas.

Wise is the author of:

  • Rattling the Cage – Toward Legal Rights for Animals (2000)
  • Drawing the Line – Science and the Case for Animal Rights (2003)
  • Though the Heavens May Fall – The Landmark Trial That Led to the End of Human Slavery (2005)
  • An American Trilogy – Death, Slavery, and Dominion Along the Banks of the Cape Fear River (2009)
